Whatcom Community College Career and Academic Advisor for TRIO Upward Bound in BELLINGHAM, Washington

Whatcom Community College welcomes applications for the Career and Academic Advisor for TRIO Upward Bound position. The Career and Academic Advisor for TRIO Upward Bound (UB) supports Whatcom Community College's (WCC) TRIO UB program in accordance with federal guidelines and regulations determined by the US Department of Education. Reporting to the Director, this position will deliver intensive career and academic advising services, specialized and dedicated academic support and college success coursework, and participate in student development activities and educational opportunities. This position will implement student recruitment and strategic enrollment activities as well as provide intensive, culturally responsive support services and programs for UB Scholars. The Career and Academic Advisor is responsible for developing and implementing career and academic coaching services and working collaboratively with program tutors, mentors, faculty, and staff in supporting and helping students build self-efficacy, resiliency and strengths-based student success strategies.

 

TRIO Upward Bound (UB), a federally funded TRIO program, is designed to assist high school students from first generation and low-income backgrounds to complete secondary school and enter post- secondary education programs. 

The program serves 60 students at Ferndale High School, Mt. Baker High School and Nooksack Valley High School. The program will also work closely with the participating high schools to develop and advance college and career development programs, activities, and events.

 

A successful candidate will:

  • Have a passion for developing relationships with students to effectively coach them to achieve their career and academic goals.
  • Perform individually and in a team setting to implement developmentally responsive, and culturally competent communication, programming, and retention strategies for students in the TRIO UB program,
  • Develop effective collaboration with key stakeholders to implement programs and services.
  • Demonstrate equity, diversity, and inclusion in all services and practices.
Responsibilities

Responsibilities include, but not limited to:

Develop partnerships and collaborate with WCC and high school faculty and staff. Communicate program goals, objectives and needs of target students to WCC and respective high school communities.

Recruit and communicate with 60 students the expectations and considerations of the UB Program. Implement culturally responsive strategies that will provide for an efficient delivery system of required and permissible student and instructional services for program participants.

Manage student caseload of UB program participants. Provide career and academic advising, implement individualized student development plans and monitor academic progress.

Implement all aspects of program events and activities for UB participants.

Assist in the development, deployment and evaluation of marketing and recruitment plans and activities. Provide guidance and resources for students and families.

Assist prospective students with their college and career plans, including a timely and accurate guidance of academic skills and assessment results to determine appropriate placement in courses, along with information related to degrees, certificates, courses, policies and procedures and resources for colleges and universities.

Maintain accurate and timely data records in accordance with grant requirements and complete requested reports that include statistics on services provided.

Serve on committee and work groups to inform and reform entry, progression and completion services and practices to better serve our diverse student population.

Attend all advisor training meetings and communication status updates and outcomes of grant activities as appropriate.
