About the Position

The Associate Medical Director is a full-time position in the Student Health Center (SHC), a medical clinic within Counseling Health and Wellness at Western Washington University. The Associate Medical Director in conjunction with the SHC Director, is responsible for the supervision of the primary care clinical providers (MD, DO, NP, PAs), while also providing clinical care to students. This position balances sometimes variable clinical and administrative duties based on need.

Job Description

The Associate Medical Director functions as a staff provider: sixty to eighty (60-80) percent of this position is clinical and consists of direct patient care. These efforts include providing direct primary care and behavioral health services, telemedicine, and health education to the student population at Western Washington University. Candidates must work collaboratively, cooperatively, and efficiently with nurses, providers, and other administrative and clinical staff.

Other tasks include supporting, managing, and evaluating primary care providers, participating in relevant Student Health Center committees and working groups, and being a member of the management team within the Student Health Center. The Associate Medical Director participates in the rotating on-call schedule with other primary care providers.

The Associate Medical Director represents the SHC Director when they are not available and assists with recruiting and onboarding primary care medical providers. This position reports directly to the SHC Director and ensures that patients receive the highest standard of medical care.

Job Responsibilities

• Provides a holistic approach to direct medical care to students; this includes diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic medical and mental health illnesses, general health and pre-participation physical examinations, minor surgical procedures, casting/splinting, and prompt evaluation and care for emergencies including stabilization of patient prior to transport to the emergency room services.

• Responsible for training and orienting new clinicians.

• With support from the SHC Director, supervises and manages clinical providers within the Student Health Center primary care team including full time MD/DO; NP; PAs and temporary provider staff including performance management through evaluating and establishing appropriate clinical and performance expectations. Conducts annual evaluations of primary care providers.

• Participates in management responsibilities within the Student Health Center team, assists the SHC Director with evaluating, establishing, and implementing processes to improve operations.

• Provides vision and leadership in establishing and monitoring policies, operations, scope, and standards of practice of the Student Health Center, ensuring its operation is consistent with national standards of practice.

• Represents the SHC Director in their absence.

• Provides on-call coverage in rotation with other primary care providers.

Required Qualifications1) FNP or ARNP certification with master’s degree (MSN, MN) in primary care

2) Current license, in good standing, to practice in the State of Washington

3) DEA certification.

4) Current BCLS certification.

5) Ability to work cooperatively with a variety of individuals, exhibits sensitivity in working effectively with people with diverse backgrounds and perspectives, and interfaces effectively with students, SHC staff, and University administrators.

6) Three or more years' experience in practicing primary care medicine in an ambulatory care setting.

Preferred Qualifications1) Experience working in a university or college health clinic and/or urgent care clinic setting.

2) Experience assessing, diagnosing, treating mental health disorders within the scope of the family practice care model.

3) Expertise in adolescent health, gynecological and reproductive health and in the care of LGBTQ patients.

4) Has an affinity for a university student population while recognizing and supporting the mission of student-centered care along their academic journey.

5) Excellent technical and professional management skills, including conflict resolution.

6) Previous supervisory experience in a clinical setting.

7) Familiarization with an electronic health record system, Point and Click preferred.

Salary Hiring range is $129,426 - $148,840/year. Through longevity this position tops out at $168,254/year.
