HNTB Senior Rail Communications Engineer in Bellevue, Washington

The Senior Communications Engineer will be responsible for the design, deployment, and maintenance of communications systems supporting Light Rail operations. This includes fiber optic networks, radio systems, CCTV, public address systems, and other critical communication infrastructure.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

System Design & Integration - Develop comprehensive communications system designs, including fiber backbones, wireless networks, CCTV, PA/VMS, and passenger information systems. Ensure interoperability with train control, SCADA, and other subsystems.

Technology Evaluation - Research, evaluate, and recommend new technologies or system enhancements to improve performance, reliability, and security.

Work with vendors to assess technical solutions and ensure they meet project requirements.

Project Leadership - Develop design deliverables, procurement packages, cost estimates, and schedules for communications projects. Oversee system integrators, contractors, and suppliers to ensure timely, on-budget delivery.

Installation & Commissioning - Provide on-site technical support during equipment installation, system configuration, and commissioning. Participate in factory acceptance tests (FAT) and site acceptance tests (SAT).

Security & Reliability - Implement network security best practices to protect critical infrastructure. Monitor and analyze system performance, troubleshooting issues to maintain high availability.

Standards & Compliance - Ensure designs comply with local and national codes, industry best practices and standards. Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders to obtain necessary approvals.

Documentation & Training - Develop and maintain detailed documentation, including system schematics, configuration guides, and O&M manuals. Conduct training sessions for operations and maintenance staff.

What You'll Do:

  • Performs independent technical reviews, makes recommendations, and provides technical guidance as requested on complex or unusual engineering projects. Provides direction to resolve technical issues as requested.

  • Provides technical expertise and advice to project leadership, and mentoring/support to production staff.

  • Assists in marketing responsibilities, including proposal generation on complex or unusual projects within discipline.

  • Coordinates technical aspects with client counterpart and teaming partners at local leadership level for work within and across disciplines on complex or unusual projects.

  • Develops and advises on technical consistency within and across disciplines on processes and projects. Ensures same standard and practices are being applied.

  • Recruits, hires, develops and retains staff of discipline-specific team, including development of plan for staff reporting, performance and compensation reviews, and succession. Coordinates schedules and approves timecards. Collaborates with Sections and Departments within the office on work-sharing needs and opportunities.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

What You'll Need:

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field and 12 years of relevant experience, or

  • Master’s degree in relevant field and 11 years of relevant experience, or

  • PhD in relevant field and 10 years of relevant experience

What We Prefer:

  • Master’s degree in Engineering

  • 20 years relevant experience

  • Professional Engineer (PE) certification

The approximate pay range for the Greater Seattle, WA Metro Area is $168,853.83 - $269,727.55. Please note that the pay range provided is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Actual compensation will be dependent on factors, including but not limited to, the individual’s qualifications, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities as well as physical work location within the state.

The approximate pay range for Colorado is $161,512.36 - $258,000.27. Please note that the pay range provided is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Actual compensation will be dependent on factors, including but not limited to, the individual’s qualifications, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities as well as physical work location within the state.
