System One Nuclear Fuel Fabrication and Development Engineer in Bellevue, Washington

Our Client is seeking a highly motivated Nuclear Fuel Fabrication and Development Contract Engineer to support the engineering efforts of the Nuclear Design Discipline team. This role will work as part of a high functioning team of engineers focused on fuel fabrication process development and testing for next generation fuel and materials for sodium cooled fast reactors. You will be responsible for helping develop the fuel fabrication process for the Natrium reactor core, as well as supporting qualification testing and analysis of fuel and materials.

  • Provide vendor oversight and direction in development of attractive fabrication routes for advanced fuel designs

  • Provide direction and oversight of supplier projects, working with the contract, project, and technical team to ensure delivery of data and other deliverables to meet requirements

  • Coordinate technical review process of supplier deliverables and ensure appropriate responses

  • Develop material and process specifications, as well as provide input to component drawings/specifications to ensure product performance meets design requirements and manufacturers’ capabilities

  • Evaluate fabrication and processing options to aid in selection of the most cost-efficient pathway to meet product specifications and throughput targets

  • Aid in development of process flow descriptions and assessments, facility layout, staffing and planning

  • Support test design and analysis activities for fuel development and qualification

  • Interface with various project teams to aid in advancing the fuel and reactor designs for Client's reactor development programs

  • Assist with supplier audits per ASME NQA-1-2015

  • Design and execute test programs to evaluate the impacts of manufacturing variability effects on fuel properties and performance in a liquid sodium, neutron-irradiated environment

  • Inform fuel and materials test programs to validate models of fuel performance and ensure fuel development and testing efforts meet programmatic objectives of the Natrium reactor

    Key Qualifications and Skills

  • Minimum of 5 years of related experience with a B.S. degree; or an advanced degree with related experience, or equivalent experience. A degree in Materials Science/Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical discipline is desired

  • A solid understanding of metallurgy including fabrication and thermomechanical processing of nonferrous alloys (uranium and uranium alloys experience preferred)

  • Practical experience with key metal forming (extrusion, rolling, swaging, drawing, etc.) and casting processes

  • Practical experience with manufacturing variability to aid in development of process controls and setting achievable tolerances/specifications

  • Demonstrated skills in developing requirements, specifications, and defining supplier technical work scope (including development of SOWs and providing technical direction and oversight of supplier projects).

  • Experience working in stringent quality systems (e.g., NQA-1, ISO-9001, AS9100) preferred

  • A general understanding of the design of reactor plant and related systems and experience with sodium cooled fast reactors would be considered a plus

  • Ability to work with minimum direction to solve challenging problems
