TerraPower MCFR Senior Safety Engineer in Bellevue, Washington
TITLE: MCFR SENIOR SAFETY ENGINEER (Thermal-Hydraulics) LOCATION:Bellevue, Washington, USA TerraPower is a nuclear technology company based in Bellevue, Washington. At its core, the company is working to raise living standards globally through a more affordable, secure and environmentally friendly form of nuclear energy along with innovations in medical isotopes to improve human health. In 2006, TerraPower originated with Bill Gates and a group of like-minded visionaries who evaluated the fundamental challenges to raising living standards around the world. They recognized energy access was crucial to the health and economic well-being of communities and decided that the private sector needed to take action and create energy sources that would advance global energy deployment. TerraPower's mission is to be a world leader in new nuclear technologies, while developing innovators and future leaders in the nuclear field. As a result, the company's activities in the fields of nuclear energy and related sciences are yielding significant innovations in the safety and economics of nuclear power, hybrid energy and medical applications - all for significant human health benefits." TerraPower is seeking to hire highly motivated and forward-thinking professionals who are interested in focusing on advanced nuclear reactor research and development and influencing change within the nuclear power landscape and bringing forward the critical production of medical isotopes. MCFR SENIOR SAFETY ENGINEER (Thermal-Hydraulics) TerraPower, LLC. is seeking a Senior Safety Engineer with a background in transient analysis. This position will work on the assessment of transient scenarios in support of the safety basis of Molten Chloride Reactor Experiment (MCRE) and future reactor projects. An ideal candidate has strong knowledge of thermal-hydraulic phenomena in nuclear reactors, particularly those in non-water based systems. Additionally, a candidate should have some level of understanding of the nuclear kinetics approaches employed in system level codes and how these methods couple with thermal-hydraulics. This position has an opportunity to analyze transients for molten salt systems in novel manners. Additionally, this work provides an opportunity to connect simulation to experiments performed at the TerraPower laboratory. An ideal candidate would also have familiarity in connecting plant simulators to simulation tools. Responsibilities * Computational analysis of plant-wide thermal hydraulic transients to support safety basis * Develop and apply thermal-hydraulic analysis methods from steady state one dimensional network hydraulic analysis to transient, three-dimensional, calculations * Work with simulator vendors to connect transient simulations to the simulator representation * Support model Verification & Validation (V&V) efforts of reactor designs * Integrate with testing team to propose experiments to support safety case and modeling assumptions Key Quals and Skills * B.S. Degree (or higher) in Nuclear, Mechanical, or Chemical engineering (or equivalent) with application to Nuclear Systems * 3-7 years' experience in Nuclear Systems Thermal-Hydraulic analysis and transients to support safety calculations * 3-7 years' experience with a nuclear systems code(s) (e.g. RELAP, SASSYS, GOTHIC, SAM, MELCOR) * Knowledgeable of nuclear systems fundamentals such as thermal hydraulics, nuclear kinetics, neutronics, and general reactor transient behavior * Familiarity with model V&V approaches in nuclear safety applications * Programming language proficiency with at least one of python, C++, FORTRAN * Familiarity and experience with analysis of Anticipated Operational Occurrence (AOO), Design Basis Event (DBE), Design Basis Accident (DBA), and/or Beyond Design Basis Event (BDBE) is required * Demonstrated ability to p
