Microsoft Corporation Applied Scientist in Bellevue, Washington

We are the Microsoft Turing team and we're looking for a passionate Senior Applied Scientist to help us on our mission to employ deep learning to power end-user experiences across the following four areas:

  • Relevance of search results on

  • Question-answering system for Bing and Cortana

  • Enterprise search for SharePoint and other work-related content

  • Recommendation system for news feed system

As a team, we collaborate on and own projects across the entire deep learning lifecycle. This includes deep learning models for language representation, language generation, ranking, summarization, smart reply, universal representation learning, reinforcement learning, question-answering, user modeling, etc. Apart from this, we also work on large-scale distributed training, improving training performance, run-time optimized inference, and other similar aspects. The team works across most of the common modeling scheme like Transformers, RNNs, CNNs, VAEs, GANs, etc. Most of these models are targeted to serve live user traffic and hence must be optimized for serving at very tight latency constraints. We use a diverse set of hardware to serve our models including CPUs, GPUs, and FPGAs. Collectively, our goal in Turing is to delight our users through our products and, allowing us to do so are a few core drivers: large scale machine learning, including deep learning technologies; analyzing, inferring and experimenting with truly big data; and a team that, together, is laser focused on the customer.

To help us achieve our goals, we seek passionate and ambitious Applied Scientists with demonstrable skills in information retrieval, deep learning, machine learning, natural language processing, data mining and/or large-scale distributed computation. If this sounds like an opportunity you’d like to explore, we’d welcome the chance to review your application!

Please note that our interview process will require all final round candidates to present a talk at the beginning of the final interview day. This talk is intended to provide each candidate with the opportunity to share their academic and/or industry work (research, projects, ideas) on topics related to ML and/or deep learning with members of the Turing team in a group setting. It's a chance for everyone to get to know more about you!

When joining our team, some of your responsibilities will include:

  • Research and development of Deep Learning models for Microsoft AI Scenarios, including: language understanding, language generation, multi-modal representation, etc.

  • Pushing the envelope of Deep Learning by exploring:

  • Model design and architecture

  • Data manipulation of billions trillions of data

  • Scaling up models to billions trillions of parameters

  • Learning objectives and tasks

  • Optimization

  • Distillation, compression and acceleration of Deep Learning models for product applications

  • DL Infrastructure and platform support

As an Applied Scientist on our team, you will be driving projects through their entire lifecycle from idea creation through implementation, experimentation and, finally, shipping to our users. We are looking for motivated, results-oriented applied scientists to help drive the design and implementation of the next wave of product improvements for Bing and Microsoft. Upon joining our team, you will be working with truly big data by training and extending the capability of deep learning models to provide compelling experiences across our products. Projects can span across modeling, data engineering, model optimization, large scale experimentation, and shipment of cutting-edge technology for 100s of millions of users. Due to the wide range of project opportunities, projects are assigned based on a person’s interests and background. Also, our project assignments are fairly permeable so one can move around and play different roles depending on their interest.

Below are the qualifications that are required for this role:

  • Bachelors or advanced degree

  • Experience applying Machine Learning and/or Deep Learning techniques

  • 4+ years of experience coding in Python, C++, C#, C or Java

  • Passionate and self-motivated

  • Ability to effectively collaborative and ship production features in a multi-project, fast-paced team environment

  • Good communication skills, both verbal and written

  • Customer/end result/Metrics driven in design and development
