Muckleshoot Indian Tribe Cultural Regalia and Performance Specialist - MTM Only in Auburn, Washington

JOB SUMMARY

Under supervision of the Master Cultural Traditions Specialist, at assigned location, teaches and instructs students in Muckleshoot cultural activities and supervises progress to meet the individual needs of students. Will be trained and practice arts to broaden one’s knowledge base, with an emphasis on holistic/ceremonial support.

MAJOR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Plans cultural activities, knowledge, classes and other events, including, but not limited to, song, dance, and regalia making, designed to meet individual student needs and whole groups that may include at risk or special needs youth. Instructs students in numerous cultural arts and crafts.

  • Will assist with Tribal, Tribal members, and community members as applicable in funeral, memorial, smoke house, shaker and holistic support. Support will include cooking, cleaning and other funeral procedures.

  • When not involved in holistic support activities this position will help develop skills of participants in many areas, including but not limited to beadwork, cedar weaving, song, and dance specific to Salish indigenous processes.

  • Responsible for the overall development and care of MIT Canoe Family regalia.

  • Will co-facilitate MIT Canoe Family performances.

  • Will get training on various indigenous gathering processes including collection processes, seasons, procedures and practices.

  • Will get involved and trained on the various uses of plants in the production of utilitarian items.

  • Collects and interprets a variety of data; provides reports and newsletters for administrative purposes.

  • Attends or participates in required staff meetings and other activities deemed necessary.

  • Because of the Tribe’s commitment to community service and the well-being of its members, each employee may be expected to perform a wide range of office and field duties from time to time. Such duties may or may not be related to their regular responsibilities.

EDUCATION - EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING FOR POSITION

High School diploma or GED equivalent and three (3) years of Tribal cultural activity planning and instruction experience required.

SPECIFIC SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES REQUIRED FOR POSITION

Skilled in: Using necessary equipment, computers, machinery, tools or software, including safe handling of scissors, needles, awls, chisels, saws, sewing machines and knives; designing and implementing lesson plans for students having a wide range of achievement; working with students in a positive and confident manner; organizing activities in keeping with the maturity and attention span of assigned students; providing instruction and demonstrating techniques; proficient use of reading, writing and oral communications; effective communication with students, parents or guardians, staff and administrators. .

Knowledge of: Cultural plants used in manufacture of native utilitarian items, indigenous collection processes and practices, history, stories, songs, and dances used by cultural groups, design and constructions of cultural items, preparation of raw materials; Muckleshoot history, culture, and arts; effective behavior management techniques; rules and procedures for student safety.

Ability to: Organize activities; read and write; follow verbal and written instructions; work with students in a positive and confident manner; observe safe work practices; establish and maintain cooperative work relationships; arrive to work in a timely manner; attend required training; maintain confidentiality; integrate curriculum in the design, preparation, and construction of cultural items utilizing indigenous processes and practices.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to have manual and finger dexterity for operation of personal computer and routine paperwork; sit, talk, see, or hear; remain still in designing and implementing cultural activities. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, balance, bend at the waist, crouch, kneel, twist, use foot controls, and operate a motor vehicle; lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
