Summary/General Description Of Job:
The Water/Wastewater Operator controls an entire process or system of machines, often through the use of control boards, to transfer or treat water or wastewater.
Essential Duties & Job Functions:
Controls various water/wastewater systems and machines and equipment to purify and clarify water for human consumption and for industrial use.
Operates and controls electric motors, pumps, and valves to regulate flow of raw water into treating plant.
Dumps specified amounts of chemicals, such as chlorine, and phosphate into water or adjusts automatic devices that admit specified amounts of chemicals into tanks to disinfect, deodorize, and clarify water.
Starts agitators to mix chemicals. Pumps purified water into water mains. Monitors panel board and adjusts controls to regulate flow rates, loss of head pressure and water elevation, and distribution of water.
Cleans sewage wetwells and tanks.
Repairs and lubricates machines and equipment, using hand tools and power tools.
Tests water samples to determine acidity, color, and impurities, using colorimeter, turbidimeter, and conductivity meter.
Records data, such as residual content of chemicals, water turbidity, and water pressure.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
May perform work in other classifications when incidental work is necessary to the accomplishment of the work assignment. Significant work in another job classification may be required if accompanied by any wage adjustments applicable.
The proper use of tools and equipment commonly used in the wastewater treatment field.
Completing all mandated training requirements per government and management directives.
Timely and cost effective performance of duties.
Timely completion and accuracy of all departmental work.
Dealing with a variety of people in a professional, courteous manner in diversified situations.
Adherence to established company safety policies and good industrial and office safety practices.
Compliance with company Standard Operating Procedures and Personnel policies and procedures.
Having the ability to work well under pressure.
High school education or equivalent plus four years experience in treatment, clarification, and purification of water, and including experience in mechanical and electrical system maintenance experience.
Must possess Water Distribution Manager II license required by Washington State. Qualifications and certifications must comply with the requirements of the Water Works Operator Certification regulations (WAC 246-292).
Must possess a Backflow Assembly Tester License from Washington State.
Must have and maintain hand tools of the trade to perform the normal work of the classifications.
Must possess and maintain a valid Washington State Class “A” commercial driver's license within 6 months.
Must meet and maintain company physical and security requirements, including respirator qualification, and clearance eligibility when required.
Must possess good communication skills for a service team environment.
Ability to successfully pass any background checks and/or drug testing required on the contract.
- Associates of Arts (or higher) in related field.
