The Applied Physics Laboratory is a research unit at the University of Washington. Our research expertise is in ocean physics and engineering, ocean and medical acoustics, polar science, environmental remote sensing, and signal processing. We are seeking to hire a temporary (6-month, fixed duration) for a Maintenance Mechanic 1 within the Resources and Facilities team.

Under the general supervisor of the Logistics and Shipping/Receiving Manager, The Maintenance Mechanic 1 position will be responsible for maintaining warehouse cleanliness and organization and will perform simple logistics tasks. This position will be responsible for assisting in the APL storage request, surplus, demolition of equipment, and trucking/forklift services, and will perform simple building maintenance tasks as needed. Other duties may be assigned as needed to support the APL mission. In support of APL’s research mission and strategic goals, the focus of this position is to assist in keeping the infrastructure of the Applied Physics Laboratory’s facilities and vehicle fleet in working order. APL Facilities includes the management of seven (7) buildings and storage/dock areas as well as a vehicle and forklift fleet.

• Under general supervision, this position performs routine maintenance, repair, and troubleshoots various projects across APL facilities and on the APL forklift fleet. • Completes work orders in a timely and efficient manner and communicates completion of work orders to the requestor or Supervisor. • Identifies potential maintenance and safety problems and notifies the Supervisor of such hazards. • Utilizes safe work habits and maintains work area in an orderly manner. • Performs other work-related duties as assigned.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

• Maintains warehouse cleanliness and organization. • Assists with the assembly of equipment or any other related items for logistics operations. • Performs simple building maintenance tasks. Advanced maintenance will be escalated to a higher-level mechanic or scheduled for Physical Plant expertise. • Performs simple logistics tasks such as trucking/forklift services, assisting with warehouse surplus process, demolition of old equipment, and hazmat disposal. • Inspects facilities and equipment to identify and document issues. Maintains the exterior property and storage areas, including snow and weed removal. • Assists with the installation and construction of warehouse shelving and storage containers • Participates in a variety of equipment moves and related activities, such as careful handling of scientific equipment (i.e., skilled at using hand trucks, four-wheelers, and pallet jacks). • Completes work orders in a timely and efficient manner and communicates completion of work orders to Supervisor. • Performs simple vehicle and forklift maintenance tasks. Advanced maintenance will be escalated to a higher-level mechanic or scheduled for UW Fleet Services expertise. • May perform general cleaning tasks as needed.

Minimum Qualifications: High school graduation or GED equivalent; OR, six months’ full-time related vocational study or training; OR, six months' applicable work experience; AND, one year's full-time experience as a helper in building and equipment maintenance, construction, repair work, or equivalent.

Additional Requirements: • Capable of lifting 50 lbs. • Ability to perform demanding physical labor. • Valid WA driver's license. • Observant, self-starter. Someone who looks for the issue/problem that needs to be addressed before the issue/problem is found and reported by staff. • Ability to function independently with limited supervision, and participate as part of a team to see a project through to completion. • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Supervisor, co-workers, building occupants, and the public. • Understand and execute oral and written instructions. • Bend, stoop, reach, and work safely from ladders. • Work hours of full crew must provide coverage for standard business hours of 8 am – 5 pm. Starting shift may begin as early as 7:00 am. • Must complete appropriate University of Washington training courses as they pertain to the position, including but not limited to Back Protection / Lifting Safety, Fall Protection and Ladder Safety Training, Fire Extinguisher Training, First Aid & CPR Certification, Compressed Gas Safety, Asbestos - General Awareness, Personal Protective Equipment.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. Desirable Qualifications: • Forklift driving skills capable of competently driving a 16,500 lb. forklift. • Able to drive large box trucks (35 feet long). • Be able to operate basic power tools such as drills, saws, etc.

Conditions of Employment: • US Citizen. • Maintaining a valid WA driver’s license and maintaining active certifications including forklift. • Capable of lifting 50 lbs. • Ability to perform demanding physical labor. • Work hours of full crew must provide coverage for standard business hours of 8 am – 5 pm. Starting shift may begin as early as 7 am.
