City of Seattle Licenses & Standards Inspector in Seattle, Washington

The Department of Finance & Administrative Services is in search of Licenses and Standards Inspectors to join the Code Compliance and Consumer Protection Division's Consumer Protection Unit.The successful candidate in this position can expect to work in all aspects of Inspector work, including taxicab, limousine and Transportation Network Company (TNC) enforcement, weights and measures inspection; regulatory code inspection, business license and tax enforcement, including annual events, festivals, and periodic special events, nightlife activity and noise code compliance.

Job Responsibilities:

Primary Duties: Enforce limousine, for-hire, taxicab, and TNC vehicle standards and driver requirements on the street throughout the city of Seattle; issue citations with monetary penalties and license actions, and/or file criminal complaints for code violations. Testify at appeals in taxicab hearings or in Municipal Court for limousine and business infractions.Enforcement activities include audits of records at business offices, vehicle inspections at the City test facility, and investigations of complaints. Work hours will vary, and will include nights and weekends.

Conduct periodic inspections and tests on commercial weighing and measuring devices (fuel dispensers, scales, fuel delivery trucks, and taxi meters); check accuracy of price scanning systems at retail stores; inspect packaged goods for accurate net contents declarations, proper method of sale declarations, and complete and accurate product labels.Inspectors drive special purpose trucks in heavy traffic on downtown city streets and must be able to lift and use test weights and measures weighing up to 50 pounds and push a cart loaded with up to 500 pounds of test weights.

Investigate tow companies for compliance with private property impound laws. Investigate business and commercial activities for violations of license, tax, and related regulatory laws. Inspect individual businesses, including adult-oriented businesses, taverns, recreational and medical marijuana production and retail facilities; and theaters and sports events to determine compliance with license and tax requirements.Enforcement action will include the issuance of notices to comply, citations, and criminal complaints.

Regular communication with members of regulated industries and the public is essential to create awareness and educate about regulatory requirements; complete daily work logs and periodic activity reports; develop and present cases to the Law Department and testify as a witness on behalf of the City of Seattle before a Hearing Examiner, a Municipal Court Magistrate or at trial.

Weekend and evening work may include team work with various other Departments and agencies with visits to nightclubs, bars, Adult Entertainment establishments, musical festivals, and mobile vending. Noise code enforcement may include taking decibel readings using a certified Type II Sound Meter in response to noise complaints.

Qualifications:

Minimum ## Qualifications:

Two years of code interpretation and enforcement or full-time work experience in accounting, budgeting, finance, credit, and collections, outside sales, or other fields directly related to business management and enforcement actions (or a combination of education and/or training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class).

  • May require working around hazardous/toxic chemicals.
  • Depending on the shift and planned duties, the Inspector may work alone, in pairs, or on teams with other Inspectors.
