We are seeking a world-class General Manager (GM) to take ownership and lead Amazon’s strategy and execution to drive transformational change in K12 education– relentlessly inventing on behalf of teachers, students, and parents to deliver products that improve student outcomes, save teachers time, and improve economics for both individual teachers and their schools/districts.
Kindle is both an iconic suite of products (devices, apps, content, services) and a thriving business, adored by customers around the world. The K12 team sits within the broader Kindle organization, and is strategic to Kindle’s global mission to inspire the world to read more (and get more out of reading) every day on all their devices. Kindle connects authors and readers, helping authors around the world make a living at their craft while giving readers instant access to millions of books—and we similarly have incredible opportunity to invent on behalf of students, teachers, and parents to improve K12 education.
The Amazon Kindle team is looking for a visionary, entrepreneurial senior leader who has a proven track record of inventing and delivering products that customers love with business models that scale. This demonstrated success will include operating in large tech companies. The GM must bring vision, leadership, and operational execution to Amazon’s K12 products and services, ensuring they deliver an unmatched customer experience. She/he is responsible for the K12 P&L and owns the creation of all operating plans including monthly, quarterly and annual plans. She/he will lead a diverse team of strong performers to achieve these goals. The K12 GM is directly responsible for the end-to-end team across disciplines, including Product, Engineering, Sales, and Marketing.
Focus and Deliverables for first 12 Months
The role has four key objectives: (1) Craft a winning long-term vision for Amazon’s role in K12 education, (2) Invent and deliver amazing K12 products that students, teachers, and parents love and adopt at scale, (3) Drive a sustainable business model that leverages broader Amazon flywheels like Prime, Kindle Unlimited, etc. to deliver improved economics for customers while also being long-term accretive to Amazon, and (4) Hire, develop, and lead team end-to-end as GM: P&L, Product, Engineering, Sales & Marketing.
The ideal candidate should be an innovative, entrepreneurial leader who can build a business from the ground up in a new market segment as well as someone who is a strong operator who can execute against the business strategy. This requires someone with knowledge of what it takes to develop scalable, extensible business models as well as how to structure and develop organizations. This leader will have demonstrated an ability to develop a new business or transform a business into an innovative, highly successful one. An ability to simplify complex concepts and bring clarity to ambiguous situations will be critically important in this role.
As a key executive member of the Kindle organization, this role will also broadly contribute to the strategic direction of how we inspire the world to read more and get more out of reading.
The ideal candidate will have:
· At least 15+ years of leadership experience; with time at both small company/startup and operating in large companies.
· Technical product and/or service experience, ideally digital.
· A track record of success, bringing technical products to market and generating significant revenue.
· Owned /delivered products known for being best-in-class in their category, ideally scaled to tens of millions of customers
Experience working with Chief Operating Officers, Presidents, or Vice Presidents of large, high profile vendors and have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
· Education market experience, especially K12, is ideal, but it is not required.
