Job Description

BACKGROUND:

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) helps people whose lives and livelihoods are shattered by conflict and disaster to survive, recover and gain control of their future. IRC teams provide health, infrastructure, learning and economic support to people in 40 countries worldwide. The IRC also provides support to thousands of refugees resettling in 26 U.S. cities each year through housing assistance, case management and referral services, job readiness and placement, English language training, community and cultural orientation, health and wellness programs, immigration services and other community integration activities.

Location:Remote work on Pacific Time work schedule.

Commitment:5 hours/week. After-school hours are preferred.

Responsibilities:

  • Call and enroll referred families in IRC Youth Programs.

  • Assist with implementation of the Virtual Ready to Read program for grades K-5.

  • Teach 2 lessons per week to small groups of students. The program focuses on literacy and social emotional development using culturally appropriate texts in online group classes.

  • Call families for post program feedback and data collection to contribute to reporting.

  • Additional duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Reliable internet.

  • Able to work independently.

  • Culturally sensitive, respectful of diverse backgrounds and able to creatively work with multilingual students who are English language learners; previous cross-cultural communication experience is a definite plus.

  • Interest in student engagement strategies and be flexible, persistent, responsible, proactive, and effective communicator

  • Previous experience working with youth and families; understanding of basic school systems desired.

  • Interns must have reliable internet, phone service and laptop; Must feel comfortable working independently, while working alongside a team.

  • Ability to communicate effectively in English; additional fluency in languages spoken by youth arriving as refugees helpful, but not required.

  • Willingness to adhere to IRC volunteer and workplace policies.

PREFERRED:

  • Fluency in Dari/Pashto or Ukranian/Russian.

  • Teaching experience.

  • A patient, responsible, reliable, flexible, persistent, proactive, and effective communicator

Reports to:Sr. Specialist Individualized Learning Program & Acting Virtual Ready to Read Coordinator

Compensation:$25 an hour.

Posted pay ranges apply to US-based candidates. Ranges are based on various factors including the labor market, job type, internal equity, and budget. Exact offers are calibrated by work location, individual candidate experience and skills relative to the defined job requirements.
